Dead Sea Jordan: How to Get There, Where to Swim and Tips

Floating effortlessly at the lowest point on Earth is one of the experiences everyone remembers from Jordan. Here is how to get to the Dead Sea, where to swim and the golden rules for enjoying it safely, from our team in Amman.
• The Dead Sea is about 1 hour from Amman and 45 minutes from the airport.
• The easiest way to swim is at a resort with beach access, by staying overnight or with a day pass.
• Float on your back, never put your head under, and rinse off with fresh water afterwards.
Why do you float in the Dead Sea?
The water is almost ten times saltier than the ocean, so it is much denser than your body. You float without any effort, and the mineral-rich water and black mud are famous for the skin.
How to get to the Dead Sea
From Amman it is about 1 hour by car (around 60 km), and from Queen Alia Airport about 45 minutes. Public transport is very limited, so most visitors go by private car or as part of a tour. The Dead Sea is also easy to combine with the Baptism Site, Madaba or Mount Nebo.
Where to swim: resort or public beach
- Resorts: the most comfortable option, with showers, pools, sun loungers and safe beach access. You can stay overnight or buy a day pass.
- Public beach (Amman Beach): cheaper, with basic facilities.
The golden rules for swimming
- Enter slowly and lie back; do not swim on your front.
- Never put your head under the water and keep it away from your eyes.
- Do not shave the day before: the salt stings small cuts.
- Stay in for 10–15 minutes at a time and rinse off with fresh water.
- Wear sandals: the shore can be rocky and salty.
When to go
The Dead Sea is warm all year. Spring and autumn are ideal; in winter the days are still around 20–23 °C, and in summer it is very hot, so swim in the morning or late afternoon. See Jordan in winter.
What to see near the Dead Sea
The Baptism Site of Jesus at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, Mount Nebo, Madaba, the Dead Sea Panoramic Complex and the canyon of Wadi Mujib.
