Jordan, located at the crossroads of the Middle East, boasts a diverse climate due to its varied topography and geographical position. The country experiences four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn, with weather conditions that differ dramatically between regions. In the north and western highlands, including the capital Amman, winters can be chilly and rainy, with temperatures occasionally dipping below freezing, especially at night. Snow is not uncommon during winter months in the higher elevations. Summers, however, are generally hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius (77°F to 90°F). The summer heat is typically moderated by the high altitude. The Jordan Valley, which includes the Dead Sea and the area around the Jordan River, enjoys a subtropical climate. Winters here are mild, while summers are intensely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F). The region also experiences very low humidity, making it a popular destination for those seeking therapeutic treatments in the Dead Sea. To the east, the desert climate of the vast Jordanian desert, or Badia, is characterized by extreme temperatures. Summers are scorching, with daytime temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F), while winters can be bitterly cold, with temperatures occasionally dropping to near freezing. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year in the desert areas. Jordan experiences most of its rainfall between November and March, primarily in the northern and western regions. The eastern desert and southern areas, including Petra and Aqaba, remain dry for much of the year. The Red Sea resort city of Aqaba enjoys a warm climate year-round, with winter temperatures hovering around 20°C (68°F), making it an ideal winter destination. In general, Jordan’s climate offers a blend of Mediterranean and desert climates, making it a year-round travel destination. However, the best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), when temperatures are moderate (spring also brings green landscapes after the winter rains).
