How Many Days Do You Need in Jordan? 3, 5, 7 & 10-Day Plans

It is the first question almost every traveller asks us: "How many days do I need in Jordan?" The short answer is 5 to 7 days for most first-time visitors. That is enough to see Petra properly, sleep under the stars in Wadi Rum, float in the Dead Sea and walk the Roman streets of Jerash, without rushing.
But the right number depends on what you want to see, how much time you have and how you like to travel. Below, our team in Amman explains what is realistic in 3, 5, 7 and 10 days, with real drive times and sample itineraries.
• 3 days: Petra only (or Petra + Wadi Rum, if you don't mind long drives)
• 5 days: the classic highlights: Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea
• 7 days: the ideal first trip, adding Jerash, Madaba, Mount Nebo and a slower pace
• 10 days: the full Jordan, with two days in Petra, Aqaba and the Red Sea, or the Biblical sites
First, understand the distances
Jordan looks small on the map, but its main sights stretch from north to south along a single line. Most trips start and end at Queen Alia International Airport, 30 minutes south of Amman. These are the typical drive times by private car:
| Route | Approx. drive time |
|---|---|
| Amman → Jerash | 50 minutes |
| Amman → Dead Sea | 45 minutes |
| Amman → Petra (Desert Highway) | 3 hours |
| Amman → Petra via Madaba & Mount Nebo (King's Highway) | 4–5 hours with stops |
| Petra → Wadi Rum | 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Wadi Rum → Aqaba | 1 hour |
| Wadi Rum → Dead Sea | 4 hours |
The lesson: Petra and Wadi Rum are in the south, the Dead Sea and Jerash are in the north. Every extra day saves you a long drive and gives you more time at the sites.
Jordan in 3 days: Petra (and maybe Wadi Rum)
Three days is the minimum if you want to see Petra without a 6-hour round trip in one day. A typical plan:
- Day 1: Arrive in Amman, short city tour (Citadel and Roman Theatre).
- Day 2: Drive to Petra and spend a full day inside the ancient city: the Siq, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs and, if you have the energy, the climb to the Monastery.
- Day 3: Back to Amman, or continue to Wadi Rum for a jeep tour and a desert camp.
Our Petra Weekend Tour (3 days / 2 nights, from $345 per person) follows this plan. If you want the desert too, the Petra & Wadi Rum Weekend (from $385 per person) adds a Wadi Rum jeep tour and a night in a Bedouin camp with dinner.
Jordan in 5 days: the classic highlights
With five days you can see the "big four" of Jordan: Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea, at a comfortable pace. This is the most popular length for travellers combining Jordan with Egypt, Israel or a Gulf stopover.
- Day 1: Arrival in Amman.
- Day 2: Madaba (the famous mosaic map) and Mount Nebo on the way to Petra.
- Day 3: Full day in Petra.
- Day 4: Wadi Rum jeep tour at sunset and a night in a desert camp.
- Day 5: Drive to the Dead Sea, float and relax, then transfer to the airport.
See our Public Jordan Tour (5 days / 4 nights, from $595 per person), or the shorter Quick Jordan Tour (4 days / 3 nights, from $475 per person).
Jordan in 7 days: the ideal first trip
If you can, give Jordan a week. Seven days lets you add Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, plus a relaxed night at the Dead Sea, and you won't spend your holiday in the car.
- Day 1: Arrival in Amman.
- Day 2: Jerash and Ajloun Castle, Amman city tour.
- Day 3: Madaba and Mount Nebo, drive to Petra.
- Day 4: Full day in Petra.
- Day 5: Little Petra and Wadi Rum, night in a desert camp.
- Day 6: Aqaba or the Dead Sea.
- Day 7: Dead Sea morning and departure.
Our best-selling Best of Jordan (6 days / 5 nights, from $705 per person) and Jordan Highlights Plus (7 days / 6 nights, from $835 per person) are built around this route.
Jordan in 8–10 days: the full experience
With more than a week you can travel the way Jordan deserves:
- Two full days in Petra: one for the main trail, one for the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice and quieter trails. Our Nabatean Wonders Route (8 days / 7 nights, from $930 per person) does exactly this.
- Biblical and historical Jordan: the Baptism Site, Mount Nebo, Madaba and Umm Qais. See our Biblical Jordan tour (9 days / 8 nights, from $1,030 per person).
- Relax and nature: Wadi Mujib, Ma'in Hot Springs and two nights at the Dead Sea, as in our Relaxation Tour (5 days / 4 nights, from $525 per person), which you can combine with Petra.
How many days do you need for Petra alone?
Plan at least one full day inside Petra. The walk from the entrance through the Siq to the Treasury is about 2 km, and the main trail to the Monastery and back is around 8–10 km with 800 steps. Two days let you see the site without rushing and add Petra by Night (held on selected evenings each week). A day trip from Amman is possible, but it means about 6 hours of driving in one day.
Our tips to get the most out of your days
- Stay more than two nights: with our packages, the Jordan tourist visa is free for eligible travellers staying more than two nights.
- Sleep in Wadi Rum, not just visit: the sunset and the stars are the highlight for many of our guests.
- Put the Dead Sea at the end: it is 45 minutes from the airport, perfect for your last day.
- Go private: with your own car and driver you leave when you want and stop where you like, which saves hours compared with public transport.
- Best seasons: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable for walking in Petra.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4 days enough for Jordan?
Yes, for the essentials: Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. You will skip Jerash and Madaba, and days will be busier.
Can I see Petra and Wadi Rum in one day?
It is possible from Aqaba, but it is a very long day. We recommend at least one night near Petra or in Wadi Rum.
Is one week in Jordan too long?
Not at all. A week is the ideal length for a first visit and still leaves sites for a second trip.
Do I need a guide in Petra?
It is not required, but a licensed local guide brings the Nabatean history to life. We can add one to any package.
Where should I start my trip?
Most trips start in Amman (Queen Alia Airport). If you fly into Aqaba, we can reverse the route.
