Wadi Rum Guide: Jeep Tours, Desert Camps and Best Time

Jeep tour among the red dunes of Wadi Rum, Jordan

Wadi Rum is the desert most travellers dream of when they think of Jordan: red sand, huge sandstone mountains, rock bridges and some of the clearest night skies in the Middle East. Here is a practical guide from our team in Amman, who send guests to Wadi Rum every week.

Quick answer
• How long: one night is ideal. You arrive in the afternoon, see the sunset, sleep in a camp and leave after breakfast.
• What to do: a 4x4 jeep tour (2 or 4 hours), sunset over the dunes, stargazing, and optionally a camel ride or a hot-air balloon.
• Where to sleep: a desert camp, from simple Bedouin tents to luxury "Martian" domes and bubble tents.

Where is Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum is in the south of Jordan, about 1 h 45 from Petra, 1 hour from Aqaba and around 4 hours from Amman. It is a protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most visitors combine it with Petra: Petra one day, Wadi Rum the next afternoon.

Jeep tours: 2 hours or 4 hours?

The jeeps are driven by local Bedouin drivers who know every rock. The ride is bumpy but safe and suitable for all ages.

Sleeping in the desert: which camp?

  • Standard Bedouin camps: comfortable tents with private bathrooms in most camps, dinner and breakfast included.
  • Luxury camps: larger tents with real beds, hot showers and a restaurant.
  • Martian domes and bubble tents: transparent or panoramic domes where you can watch the stars from bed. They are the most popular option, so book early, especially in spring, autumn and over New Year.

Every camp we book includes dinner, usually the traditional zarb (meat and vegetables cooked under the sand), and a Bedouin evening around the fire.

Best time to visit Wadi Rum

The best months are March to May and September to November: warm days and fresh nights. In winter (December to February) the days are sunny and pleasant, but nights can drop close to 0 °C, so bring a warm layer; the camps provide heavy blankets. In summer the middle of the day is very hot, so jeep tours run in the late afternoon.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes for the sand and a scarf or hat for the sun.
  • A warm jacket for the evening, all year round.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a power bank (some camps have limited sockets).
  • A small bag for the night: large suitcases can stay in your car.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night in Wadi Rum enough?

Yes, for most travellers. One night gives you the sunset, the stars and a jeep tour. Stay two nights if you want to hike or explore the deep desert.

Can I visit Wadi Rum as a day trip?

Yes, from Petra or Aqaba, but you miss the best part: the sunset, the silence and the stars at night.

Is Wadi Rum suitable for children?

Yes. Children love the jeep, the dunes and the camp. Families often choose a dome or a larger tent together.

Wadi Rum is included in most of our Jordan tour packages; see also our 7-day Jordan itinerary.
