Can You See Petra in One Day? Day Trip vs. Overnight

Yes, you can see Petra in one day, and thousands of travellers do it every year. In one well-planned day you can walk the Siq, stand in front of the Treasury, follow the Street of Facades to the Royal Tombs and, if you are fit, climb to the Monastery. What you cannot do in one day is see it slowly.
The real question is whether you should do it as a day trip from Amman or stay overnight near Petra. Our team in Amman organises both every week, so here is an honest comparison.
• Day trip from Amman: possible, about 6 hours of driving in total and 5–6 hours inside Petra. Good if you are short on time.
• One night near Petra: the best balance. You arrive the evening before, enter at opening time and avoid the crowds.
• Two days in Petra: ideal if you want the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice and Petra by Night without rushing.
What you can see in one day
With 5–6 hours on site and comfortable shoes, a typical one-day route is:
- The Siq (about 1.2 km): the narrow canyon that leads into the city.
- The Treasury (Al-Khazneh): the famous façade at the end of the Siq.
- The Street of Facades and the Roman Theatre.
- The Royal Tombs, including the Urn Tomb, for one of the best views of the valley.
- The Colonnaded Street and the Great Temple.
- The Monastery (Ad-Deir): around 800 steps up and back, about 2 more hours. Possible in one day only if you start early and walk at a good pace.
From the entrance to the Treasury is about 2 km; the full route to the Monastery and back is around 8–10 km.
Option 1: Petra day trip from Amman
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 6:30–7:00 | Pick-up from your hotel in Amman |
| ~10:00 | Arrive at the Petra Visitor Centre |
| 10:00–15:30 | Free time inside Petra (Siq, Treasury, Royal Tombs, optional Monastery) |
| ~16:00 | Drive back to Amman |
| ~19:00 | Back at your hotel |
Pros: no hotel change, fits a short stay, good value with a private car.
Cons: a long day (about 12 hours), you arrive when the site is busiest, and the Monastery is a stretch.
Our private Petra day tour from Amman includes your own car and driver for the whole day. It costs US$ 220 for 1 traveller, US$ 150 per person for 2, and US$ 130 per person for 4. Entrance tickets are not included.
Option 2: stay one night near Petra (our recommendation)
Staying in Wadi Musa, the town next to Petra, changes the experience completely:
- Enter at opening time (early morning), when the Siq is quiet and the light on the Treasury is soft.
- No 6-hour round trip on the same day, so you have the energy for the Monastery.
- Add Petra by Night, held on selected evenings each week, when the Siq and the Treasury are lit by hundreds of candles.
- Continue south easily: Wadi Rum is only 1 hour 45 minutes away.
Our Petra Weekend Tour (3 days / 2 nights, from $345 per person) gives you a full, relaxed day in Petra. If you also want the desert, the Petra & Wadi Rum Weekend (from $385 per person) adds a sunset jeep tour and a night in a Bedouin camp. See all our Petra tours from Amman.

Tickets: what to know
- Petra tickets are cheaper for visitors who spend at least one night in Jordan than for same-day visitors, and there are 1-, 2- and 3-day tickets.
- The Jordan Pass includes Petra entry and, for most nationalities, the tourist visa fee. It is worth it if you stay at least 3 nights.
- Prices can change, so check the official rate before you travel, or ask us and we'll confirm it for your dates.
Our tips for one day in Petra
- Start as early as you can: the morning is cooler and quieter.
- Wear proper walking shoes and bring water, a hat and sun cream, even in winter.
- Decide on the Monastery before you start: if you want it, don't linger too long at the Treasury.
- Consider a local guide for the first 2–3 hours: the Nabatean stories make the site come alive. We can add one to any tour.
- Best seasons: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Frequently asked questions
Is one day enough for Petra?
One day is enough for the main highlights, including the Treasury and the Royal Tombs, and the Monastery if you start early. Two days let you explore without rushing.
How long is the drive from Amman to Petra?
About 3 hours each way on the Desert Highway, or 4–5 hours via the King's Highway with stops at Madaba and Mount Nebo.
Can I do Petra as a day trip from the Dead Sea or Aqaba?
Yes. From Aqaba it is about 2 hours each way; from the Dead Sea about 3 hours. We organise private transfers from both.
Is Petra by Night worth it?
For many travellers it is a magical extra: the Siq and the Treasury lit by candles. It only runs on certain evenings, so you need to stay overnight in Petra.
Do I need a guide in Petra?
It is not mandatory, but a licensed local guide adds a lot, especially on a short visit. We can arrange one for you.
