Jordan Visa and Jordan Pass: Is It Worth It?

The Treasury in Petra, one of the sites included in the Jordan Pass

Two questions come up in almost every message we receive from travellers planning Jordan: do I need a visa, and is the Jordan Pass worth it? Here is a clear answer from our team in Amman, who meet guests at Queen Alia Airport every week.

Quick answer
• Most European, American, British and Australian travellers can get a visa on arrival at Amman airport. The fee is 40 JD (about US$ 56).
• The Jordan Pass includes the visa fee and entry to Petra and 40+ other sites, if you buy it online before arrival and stay at least 3 nights.
• If you book a tour of 3 nights or more with us, the visa is free and arranged for you, and all entrance fees are already included, so you do not need a Jordan Pass.

Do I need a visa for Jordan?

Yes, most visitors need a tourist visa, but for many nationalities it is a simple formality. Citizens of the EU, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries can get a single-entry visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport and at most land borders. Some nationalities need prior approval before travelling; it takes a few working days, so check early or ask us.

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date.

What is the Jordan Pass?

The Jordan Pass is an official tourism package sold online by the Jordan Tourism Board. It combines the visa fee with entry tickets to more than 40 sites. There are three versions, which differ only in the number of days in Petra:

Jordan PassDays in PetraPrice
Jordan Wanderer1 day70 JD
Jordan Explorer2 consecutive days75 JD
Jordan Expert3 consecutive days80 JD

All three include the visa fee and entry to sites such as Jerash, Wadi Rum, the Amman Citadel and Roman Theatre, Ajloun, Kerak and Shobak castles, Madaba and Mount Nebo. Prices are at the time of writing: always check the official Jordan Pass website before buying.

Is the Jordan Pass worth it?

For independent travellers, almost always yes. A simple example: the visa costs 40 JD and a one-day Petra ticket costs 50 JD, so you already spend 90 JD on those two alone. The Jordan Wanderer costs 70 JD and also includes Jerash, Wadi Rum and many more.

The two conditions to remember:

  • Buy it online before you arrive. It cannot be bought at the airport.
  • Stay at least 3 nights (4 days) in Jordan. If you leave earlier, the airport will ask you to pay the visa fee on departure.

The Jordan Pass is not worth it if you are only coming for a short day trip from Israel or from a cruise ship, or if you book a tour where the visa and entrance fees are already included.

Visa and entrance fees on a tour with RTTO

When you travel with us for 3 nights or more, you do not need to think about any of this:

  • Our representative meets you in the arrival hall, before passport control, and takes care of the visa formalities.
  • The visa is free with your tour.
  • All the entrance fees in your programme are included in the price, so there is nothing to buy in advance.
